May 19--LOS ANGELES -- After the frenzy whipped up by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo with the unveiling of their new consoles, the video game industry got a cool dose of realism Wednesday.
The industry can either develop its creative spirit, master new forms of content distribution and fight off legal and political challenges, or it can stagnate, Entertainment Software Association president Doug Lowenstein said.
Mr. Lowenstein delivered that message to the hordes gathered at the Los Angeles Convention Center for the start of the game industry's annual confab, the Electronic Entertainment Expo.
There are no official numbers yet, but one presenter at the booth of game publisher Activision said it was the busiest he had ever seen this early in the show.
