May 18--People pushing for a public takeover of the Peninsula water system will need to wait until next month for a water board decision on whether to create a ballot measure favoring the idea.
A united front of Peninsula residents called late Monday for a takeover of California American Water's local system, but a deeply and evenly divided water board delayed a decision on an advisory ballot measure.
Absent, with a bad back, was board member and county Supervisor Dave Potter, who previously encouraged area mayors to consider the idea.
Three members of the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District board -- Kristi Markey, Judi Lehman and Alvin Edwards -- said it was time for the district to show leadership and lead a fight for a buyout of the private water company.
"I want this to happen," said Edwards. "It needs to happen."
But three others -- David Pendergrass, Larry Foy and Michelle Knight -- said the community couldn't afford to buy the creaky water system and shouldn't abandon Cal Am when it is on the brink ...
