May 18--Many of the millions of Americans with type 2 diabetes are leaving themselves open to life-threatening complications by not controlling their blood sugar levels through medicine, food and exercise, an analysis of data from 157,000 patients suggests.

Two out of every three patients taking a blood sugar test exceeded target levels, according to data presented Wednesday at the annual meeting of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists in Washington. The association said the analysis marks the first time specialists have monitored the nation to see how well diabetes treatment is working.
