May 17--PORTLAND -- JetBlue Airways today launches daily nonstop flights between Portland International Airport and New York City, the only direct route to the nation's financial center since Delta Air Lines discontinued service some three years ago.
The service, a so-called red-eye flight that departs Portland at 11:59 p.m., comes as the nimble, low-cost carrier continues to expand its routes just five years after being founded. Airline industry observers consider JetBlue's arrival a victory for the Portland-Clark County market.
"I think most communities are honored to have JetBlue serve them," said John F. Walsh, an aviation consultant based in Annapolis, Md. "They are a sought-after airline because they offer low prices and good service.
"Their aircraft are also relatively quiet, so they tend to make good airport neighbors," Walsh continued.
