May 17--Asked about Suffolk County's new minimum age of 19 for buying cigarettes, the 17-year-old junior at Walt Whitman High School shrugged.
"I think 18 was fine," he said. Since he started buying his own cigarettes at 16, he has been carded only "very rarely," said the Huntington teenager, who did not want his name used. And, he added, "If I wanted to, I'd just go to Nassau County."
Suffolk yesterday became the first county in New York State to raise the minimum age for buying cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 19, putting it at the cutting edge of a trend advocates say is gaining momentum.
