The battle to dominate the next generation of video game consoles has officially begun.

Microsoft took the wraps off its Xbox 360 console Thursday in a glitzy, prime-time infomercial on MTV. With the new machine, Microsoft hopes to leapfrog market leader Sony.

Expect more unveilings this week as the industry's big trade show, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, starts Wednesday in Los Angeles.

The Xbox 360 could be on the market six months or more before Sony can release a follow-up to its PlayStation 2. Microsoft plans to have the Xbox 360 in stores for Christmas.
