May 9--KYOTO, Japan -- Thailand yesterday urged the European Union to speed up its consideration to extend reduced tariffs under its Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) on shrimp from 2006-08.
Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon raised the issue on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem) with Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the EU Commissioner for External Relations.
Mr Kantathi said the EU had assured Thailand that its shrimp would qualify for the GSP rates but was determining the timeframe after it had been postponed from April of this year.
