May 6--KOH SAMUI -- The privately run Samui airport is quietly undergoing the biggest facelift since its 1989 opening, a 230-million-baht makeover complete with a new passenger terminal, longer runway, enlarged aprons and a new control tower.
The modernisation is scheduled to finish in August, as it is geared towards supporting the plans of Bangkok Airways Co, the airport's owner, to boost air services in and out of Thailand's third largest island as well as to accommodate higher peak-hour passenger demand to Samui, which is popular among European vacationers.
