May 5--Worried about crowded schools and clogged roads, Cabarrus County is looking at significantly reducing the number of homes it allows at the edges of its cities and towns.
In much of the northwest part of the county, the county commissioners are considering lowering density standards. The standards would drop from a maximum of 4.5 homes per acre to a cap of two homes per acre in the section that's expected to be annexed by Concord eventually, and to one home per acre in the section that likely will become part of Kannapolis.
The plan is raising concerns from both cities.
"You've got cities that are trying to run utilities and make a return on that investment, but you have longtime residents who are used to a rural landscape," said Cabarrus County Planning Manager Rodger Lentz.
