DETROIT _ Boston Red Sox shortstop Edgar Renteria did Wednesday night what Tigers pitchers haven't done often enough lately. He threw a strike.

Renteria's relay cut down Carlos Guillen at home in the fifth inning and kept the score tied.

The tie continued until the eighth, when reliever Kyle Farnsworth walked two of Boston's first three hitters. Kevin Youkilis, the No. 9 hitter, followed with a one-out RBI single that gave Boston a 4-3 victory at Comerica Park.

Tigers pitchers walked five and have averaged six walks in the past six games.
