May 4--Economic growth in the first quarter was better than expected due to a quick recovery in tourism from the tsunami and strong domestic consumption, according to M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula, the governor of the Bank of Thailand.

The drought has resulted in a decline in crop production, but average prices as of March improved from February.

Farm income rose 3.5 percent year-on-year in March against an 8.3 percent increase year-on-year in February. Crop production decreased by 16.6 percent year-on-year in March, compared to a decline of 7.8 percent in February, while prices rose 24.2 percent year-on-year in March from a 17.5 percent year-on-year ...
