Foreign direct investment could reach 1.06 trillion baht by 2008, nearly a 50 percent increase from this year's projection, according to Finance Minister Somkid Jatusripitak.

FDI was estimated at 656 billion baht last year and is projected to reach 700 billion this year.

Dr Somkid said the BoI would amend its investment promotion programmes to support value-added projects.

"Thailand needs to transform itself from an investment base of OEM [original equipment manufacturing] to an investment base for higher value-added products and services," he said.
