NYSE stocks acted well Friday as major indexes rallied late to end with meaningful gains on heavy volume. The Dow and S&P 500 rose 1.2% while the small-cap S&P 600 advanced 0.7%.
A number of health care stocks were among the movers on volume. HMOs and hospitals were some of the best-performing industry groups of the session.
Humana broke out of a 12-week pattern ahead of its earnings announcement Monday. Thomson First Call's consensus earnings estimate is 48 cents, up 17%. Shares rose 2.25 to 34.65 on twice average volume, boosting the stock above its 50-day moving average for the first time in just over two weeks.
Community Health Systems jumped 1.90 to 36.45, a 52-week high for the operator of rural hospitals. The stock has been rebounding strongly from its 50-day moving average and is up 31% since Jan. 1. Last week, Community Health Systems posted quarterly operating results that beat analysts' expectations.
