Chattem has been around since 1879. But its profit growth record is anything but aging.
The Chattanooga, Tenn.-based maker of a wide array of brand-name consumer health products has increased earnings from 31 cents a share in fiscal 2000 (ended in November that year) to $1.68 in fiscal 2004. That's equal to a 53% annual compounded growth rate. Not surprisingly, Chattem scores a 99 Earnings Per Share Rating, meaning its long- and short-term earnings growth is superior to 99% of all public companies.
Helping fuel recent growth has been the return of sales growth. Sales fell in fiscal 2000 and 2001, but have increased 23%, 5% and 10% the past three years. Chattem's SMR Rating is a top-notch A.
