Affymetrix is the result of the firm's GeneChip technology, developed in the late 1980s by a team led by company founder Stephen Fodor.
The company's products allow massive amounts of genetic information to be contained on a single computer chip. They are used in research that is discovering connections between genetics and human health. Its FoodExpert-ID Array, introduced in 2003, allows scientists to genetically identify the presence or absence of 33 different species of animals in any food product.
The company launched its first product in 1996, just before its IPO. The company lost money until 2002. That year it earned 13 cents a share, which grew to 74 cents in 2004. That kind of growth gives it a five-year growth rate of 235% and an Earnings Per Share Rating of 99, the highest possible. Return on equity in 2004 was 23%, its highest ever.
