Problems facing big drug makers these days have been well documented. They range from deadly medicines to questionable research practices.

It's tempting to view the industry's current woes as temporary blips that will fade away soon enough.

Don't bet on it. Industry watchers say problems facing big pharma have been a long time in the making.

Go back a half-decade and you'll see a steady slide in the stock prices of major players such as Merck, Glaxo SmithKline, Eli Lilly, Bristol Myers Squibb, Schering Plough and Pfizer.

Wanted: R&D

The malaise in big pharma runs deep. It's the result of dysfunctional corporate cultural, shortsightedness, regulatory pressure and pressure from Wall Street, experts say.
