Byline: BRIAN DEAGON
Some people might call John Spencer a little spaced out.
He wants to build a Mars-themed resort on a 120-acre desert property near Las Vegas.
Spencer is president and chief designer of Red Planet Ventures, founded in 2001.
Spencer won't name any investors or indicate how much money he's raised. But he plans to have the resort open by 2007. Tourists will don space suits and ride a space rover into a huge crater the company will excavate. Color tones on visors will present a red-tinged image.
Gravity, alas, will have to remain earthen. On Mars, a 150-pound man would weigh 57 pounds.
Spencer is one of a growing number of space entrepreneurs. Numerous projects are in the works that share the goal of promoting space commercially. Project leaders want to entice people into space for tourism, research, business and even to mine minerals.
