Dollar drops on China yuan talk
The dollar posted its biggest losses in months vs. the yen after the state-sponsored China Securities Journal said Beijing might let the yuan trade more freely at any time. But China's central bank said it hasn't received any notice from the gov't to prepare for currency reform. The dollar sank 1.32 yen to 104.78 yen. The yen also rose sharply vs. the euro, which closed a little lower vs. the dollar.
** The ECRI leading U.S. index fell to 134.8 in the week ended April 22 from 135.2 in the prior week. The annualized growth rate cooled to 3.2% from 3.4%. That's a 7-week low, but comfortably above the negative readings of last autumn.
Euro zone economy isn't "rosy'
A European Commission spokeswoman admitted conditions in the 12-nation currency region are "not exactly rosy at the moment," but said member nations' reforms should bear fruit eventually. The commission's euro zone economic sentiment index fell 1 point in April to 96.5, the lowest since Aug. '03. Consumer confidence edged up, but industrial pessimism deepened. ...
