Edward Ardizzone (1900-1979) began his career illustrating books in 1929. Over the next fifty years he worked vigorously, illustrating books for children and adults and for periodicals, advertisements, and other commercial commissions. During World War II he was made an official war artist, commissioned by the British government to make a visual record of the war.
