NORTH PORT -- The City Commission this week approved a 27 percent increase in road impact fees.

While North Port has been talking for months about charging builders more, Monday night's decision to increase the impact fee reflected less a philosophy change than it did a mandate from Sarasota County.

Bound by a contract with the county, North Port was required to raise its road impact fee after Sarasota County raised its fee in September.

The new numbers mean substantially more money for a city in dire need of widening three major arteries: Toledo Blade, Price and Sumter boulevards. The cost …
