Apr. 28--ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Rising steel prices and a competitive construction climate are keeping the city from moving forward with an ambitious redevelopment project along Candelaria in the North Valley, a resident working on the project said Tuesday.
Two bid openings for a $1 million Los Candelarias streetscape project failed to produce proposals that fit the budget because of international steel prices that are running about 15 percent above last year, Ingrid Biel, a planning consultant and volunteer working with the city on several projects impacting the North Valley, told members of the Near North Valley Neighborhood Association.
In the area along Candelaria and the intersection with 12th Street, the city is proposing to install two landscaped medians, lighting on the south side of Candelaria, sitting areas on the four corners of 12th and Candelaria as well as crosswalks, bike lanes, two entry signs and additional landscaping due to permanent easements from…
