In the past generation, women have gone from being the minority of U.S. undergraduates to the majority, according to a new report by the National Center for Education Statistics. The report notes that women have also increased their preparedness for college work and their graduation rates, often outshining their male counterparts.
These trends are especially apparent among some racial and socioeconomic groups. Women accounted for 63% of black students, 62% of students over the age of 39 and 70% of single-parent students. Women made up 56% of undergraduates in 2001 overall.
