The EdD degree should be eliminated and university programs that prepare students for K-12 leadership posts range from "inadequate to appalling," according to a report issued by Dr. Arthur Levine, Columbia University's Teachers College president.
"There is absolutely no reason why a school leader needs a doctorate," Levine said. His report, "Educating School Leaders," also notes that programs in educational leadership suffer from low admission standards, weak faculties and inappropriate degrees.
The report comes from a four-year study based on national surveys of faculty members, deans, alumni and principals, in addition to case studies of 28 departments and schools of education. Universities should stop using their ...
