According to a new report by the U.S. Department of Defense, 14% of female students and 2% of male students at military academics had been sexually assaulted between 1999 and 2004. Another 50% of women and 11% of men had been sexually harassed there.
Only one-third of women and one-quarter of men reported the assaults, for many reasons. One is that they could be punished for their conduct in the situation, such as underage drinking. But a far greater concern is fear of reprisals by their classmates or senior officers, who were the majority of the offenders.
