For almost 40 years, the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE) has influenced teaching and learning on college and universities. But it suddenly announced that it will close at the end of May, due to financial difficulties.
AAHE has faced a decrease in members, conference attendance and foundation grants. While membership was near 10,000 in the late 1990s, it is now less than 6,000. The organization's members are individuals, not institutions, so faculty and administrators are free to join this or other groups. It attracted 800 to its annual meeting in Atlanta just last month, but it faces more competition each year from new groups with more specialized objectives.
President Clara M. Lovett said the group's legacy was early recognition of the importance of assessing student learning, as well as curricular reform and diversifying college faculties.
