Apr. 26--Nine Akron schools should be closed -- including Central-Hower High -- and a middle school converted into an elementary building, a task force recommended Monday to the Akron Board of Education.
The others on the shutdown list are seven elementary schools sprinkled throughout the city. The task force also suggested that either East High or Goodyear Middle be closed.
The changes would force about 3,400 students to attend other Akron schools.
With rampant rumors circulating about which schools would be closed, the task force decided to share its initial suggestions for how to scale back the district's $800 million project -- despite the group's work not being finished.
"This has not been an easy task," said the Rev. Curtis Walker, a member of the school board and task force, during the packed board meeting. "With the state's requirements and our decrease in enrollment, we have to make some very difficult decisions."
