SunTrust establishes presence in North Carolina.

Apr. 26--SunTrust Banks Inc. made its branch-banking debut in the Triad yesterday expressing confidence that an out-of-state bank can thrive in an intensely competitive North Carolina market.

The bank, based in Atlanta, switched signage and the network system from Central Carolina Bank with few problems, said Rocky Johnson, the regional president for SunTrust.

SunTrust took over CCB as part of a $6.9 billion purchase of National Commerce Financial Corp. of Memphis, Tenn., in May 2004. Until CCB, SunTrust had no branches in North Carolina.
