TWO OF THE BRIGHTER stars in the celebrity firmament were in conjunction recently. The short visit to Australia of Prince Charles just before his controversial wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles coincided with the brief return of the newly married Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. The fleeting presence here of both Charles and Mary serves to highlight the gap between symbol and reality in the Australian Constitution that has never been wider than it is now.
Although she has no recognised place in our Constitution, Mary is more like a real princess to ordinary Australians than Charles is a prince. Her life is certainly much closer to everyday experience than Charles's ...
