Apr. 19--Don't be fooled by appearances.

At a glance, there aren't too many businesses on the Top 50 list of employers that are directly tied to technology.

A few are easy to spot.

Semiconductor-maker Infineon Technologies Richmond, owned by Munich, Germany-based Infineon Technologies AG, is completely wrapped around the technology industry.

Verizon Virginia Inc. provides telecommunications services. Listed also are chemicals firms such as DuPont and Wyeth.

But Capital One Financial Corp.? A credit-card issuer, right?

Circuit City Stores Inc.? A retailer, correct?

Tech jobs, while they appear to be nonexistent from the list of leading employers, are dispersed throughout all public and private organizations.

"The majority of the jobs in this area are in the leading employers," said Robert Stolle, president of the Greater Richmond Technology Council. "The picture in the economy has changed dramatically when it comes to tech employment. …
