Apr. 18--SHOPPING AROUND: A look at the suburbs When you're shopping around southern Mecklenburg, odds are good you'll land in ZIP code 28277. That's the Ballantyne region, and its shopping districts are clustered along three interchanges of Interstate 485.

Of the many sparkling new shopping centers there, the one that perhaps stands out most is the Promenade on Providence at I-485 and Providence Road. It includes an innovative design that gives a "back door" to a big-box Home Depot store, allowing it to open out to a pedestrian plaza with smaller stores, restaurants and a kid-friendly fountain.
