Apr. 15--Monterey-based interpreter Language Line Services lost a $6.9 million contract -- by one penny -- with the state's 911 emergency system to its Southern California competitor.

The three-year contract is for translation services of 911 callers who didn't speak English.

The company had the contract in the past, but lost it to NetworkOmni Multilingual Communications, a Thousand Oaks company that offered 1 cent-per-minute less.

Language Line offered the services at 85 cents per minute; NetworkOmni offered 84 cents. Contract terms specify a maximum payment of $6.9 million.
