Information colossus Reed Elsevier must be re-evaluating the cost of its $775m ([pounds sterling]412m) purchase of Seisint in July last year. The deal was meant to be a big booster for the LexisNexis risk management business, but last month it was helping generate unwanted headlines about security breaches and identity theft from LexisNexis databases, attracting the attention of budding "Talented Mr Ripleys" everywhere. As the Seisint unit is most notorious for supplying data to Matrix, a US Government project to collect data on citizens under the guise of combating terrorism, the irony of the situation was pretty rich. Hackers had got hold of a range of personal details assembled on up to 32,000 citizens - so the database itself, by its very existence, had become the biggest threat to the security of identity for these people.
