Professional organisations that represent librarians and other information professionals are working hard to document the rapidly shifting role of their members and to provide a roadmap for their development.
The Special Libraries Association (SLA) is promoting its Professional Competencies document to UK information professionals, in the hope that they will use the competencies as a career development tool. The competencies are a revised version of the SLA's early attempts to map the profession in 1997. They will be backed by an on-line university, set to be launched this summer.
