The launch of the Creative Archive this week (14 April) by the BBC and Open University, will provide information professionals with the first British content resource protected by Creative Commons licences instead of copyright law.
Creative Commons is an online alternative to copyright developed by legal academics - it allows users to freely use content without contacting the licence holder first.
"We are involved in a program with the BBC, the British Film Institute and broadcaster Channel 4," said Peter Giesinger, a spokesman for the Open University. "Material for non-commercial use will go into the Creative Archive."
Full details of content available in the archive are still being finalised by the main members of the partnership, although the BBC is expected to make an archive of factual television available through the initiative.
