Apr. 7--NEW HAVEN -- An 800-pound gorilla entered the Internet telephony arena today, ratcheting up the level of competition in the fledgling industry.

America Online Inc. started offering AOL Internet Phone service in 40 markets nationwide, including New Haven and Hartford.

AOL is touting its Voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP) service as less expensive and easier to use than those being promised by telephone and cable TV companies.

Among 2,000 homeowners in an initial test period, the average time it took for them to hook up the service was 5 minutes, said Jim Tobin, vice president of voice strategy for Dulles,…
