A project that is trying to narrow the gender pay gap has won the American Association of University Women's 2004 Progress in Equity Award. The GRACE Project (Generating Respect for All in a Climate of Academic Excellence) began in 1999 by documenting a $13,000 annual pay gap between female and male faculty members in the University of Arizona medical school. The women who did the research took their findings to the dean of the medical school, and five women received raises averaging $29,000 a year.
