A state appeals court recently overturned a ruling that awarded $440,00 to a former University of Michigan music student who claimed the school did not do enough to protect her from sexual harassment. The appeals court stated that, contrary to a jury's findings, the university responded adequately to her charges of harassment by a visiting orchestra conductor.
A jury had awarded Maureen Johnson the money in 2002 for damages and legal fees after finding the school had fostered a hostile environment by employing conductor Pier Calabria. Johnson claimed that Calabria made comments about her clothes, asked her for a massage and made sexually aggressive comments.
