The Dow industrials ended Monday's session 0.2% higher and the S&P 500 advanced 0.3% in lighter volume.
Crude oil prices settled at 57.01 a barrel, down 26 cents after reaching a record overnight high of $58.28. Oil and gas stocks didn't react as a group, though, with some advancing and some declining.
Among gainers from that industry, XTO Energy gapped up slightly and climbed 0.74 to 35.33 in heavy trade. Monday marked the third session in a row that the stock has gapped higher. Two of those days were in above-average volume.
Chicago Bridge & Iron also gapped up Monday. The engineering and construction firm, which is based in the Netherlands, gained 1.80 to 25.00 in twice normal turnover. Friday the stock split 2-for-1. The same day, the firm said the Justice Department had closed an investigation of its water and wastewater unit, as well as an investigation into company testimony before the Federal Trade Commission.
