The fall of 2002 proved to be a very good time for Ashley Dearborn. "I bought a one-way ticket to Italy, packed a suitcase and eighteen sketches. I was determined to find myself a shoe factory," says the leggy 30-year-old, who had recently stepped out of such jobs as copywriter for the Wall Street Journal and accessories buyer for the Tracy Feith store to pursue her footwear fetish. "As it turns out, my boyfriend's dentist's brother-in-law owns a factory, and over there, if you have that kind of connection, you're famiglia!" she says, taking her best shot at an Italian accent.
Two years and three collections later, ...
