Apr. 5--AMSTERDAM -- Phuket Air is fine-tuning its services to cope with rising oil prices and a lower number of passengers, with plans to focus more on cash-rich European tourists.
"The airline business is very, very tough, particularly during the current difficult period. It demands intensive capital and could force one to a fast exit," said vice-chairman Chairat Meksukree.
Owned by Ranong senator Vikrom Aisiri, Phuket Air began operations in early 2001, with daily services on two routes, Bangkok-Rangoon and Bangkok-Phuket. It was initially set up to accommodate the existing businesses of Mr Vikrom, who owns the luxury Andaman Club Hotel in the Burmese waters off Ranong, the Dusit Island Resort Hotel in Chiang Rai and the wood-trading firm West Group.
