The 2005 New Year Drought advantageous news for college and university faculty members aspiring to become Nationally Certified Teachers of Music. The MTNA Board of Directors and the National Certification Commission (NCC) are pleased to announce that Option 3. Administrative Verification is now available. It will allow part- or full-time college and university faculty to become NCTMs by recognizing and using their college/university evaluation processes and credentials to validate the Standards II, III and IV requirements for what a competent music teacher should be able to do. Written verification from a college or university administrator that the college or university faculty member meets the appropriate certification requirements is necessary.
Rationale for Option 3. Administrative Verification
Since the inception of the current MTNA Professional Certification Program, college and university faculty have expressed concerns about their evaluation processes and the fact that their credentials were not recognized in the program's requirements. The MTNA Board of Directors and the NCC have listened to these concerns, and the outcome is the new Option 3. Administrative Verification. It takes advantage of the evaluation processes and credentials that already are in Place within college and university structures.
Option 3 also serves as an additional route for the MTNA Professional Certification Program to be more inclusive of a diverse MTNA membership while remaining true to its philosophy and Standards. Expectations are that college and university faculty will find the new Option 3 appropriate and appealing as they experience the certification process.
