Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones' Diary (1998) and television's Sex and the City helped legitimize adult chick lit, a subgenre of romance fiction in which trendy young women dish about men, work, and clothes. Teen lit now has its own version--in which high-school girls do pretty much the same thing, though usually on a less outrageous scale.
