Global positioning systems are changing the landscape for a formerly low-tech industry: cab driving.

GPS technology, which uses satellite communication to pinpoint a location, lets dispatchers know exactly where taxis are. With that knowledge, they can send drivers to pick up passengers faster.

That means more -- and happier -- customers.

It also means a smoother overall operation, according to Alex Slawsby, an analyst with Framingham, Mass.-based International Data Corp.

"GPS success is based on number of fares transported, so it brings new levels of geographic efficiency and productivity to the industry," Slawsby said.

San Francisco's Luxor Cab, which has spent $2.3 million since 1999 on the technology, credits GPS with shorter customer wait times, more fares, safer driving and lower blood pressure all around.
