Winston-Salem, N.C., battery maker cut 200 jobs, less than expected.

Apr. 1--Douglas Battery Manufacturing Co. said yesterday that it has cut fewer jobs than expected in its transition to a leaner company focused on industrial-battery production.

The Winston-Salem company said that 200 employees were laid off in a restructuring that included the Jan. 11 sale of its struggling automotive-battery division to East Penn Manufacturing Co. of Lyon Station, Pa. East Penn is the largest privately held battery manufacturer in the world.

Douglas said on Nov. 5 that it could eliminate as many as 350 local jobs. East Penn officials could not be reached for comment on whether the company has retained any …
