The latest version of Lowrance's (800/324-1356; lowrance.com) LCX-19C combines a great new display and enough computer power to handle simultaneous fishfinding/fast-mapping screen redraws with ease. The new screen is outstanding, presenting a brighter white background and more brilliant colors.

We experienced heavy overcast during our test day and found ourselves looking for a way to turn the screen brightness down so it looked more like an average color display. We saw direct sun on the screen during a brief period and discovered that, as with all of today's color screens, full brightness and contrast using a white background delivered the most visible picture. We wouldn't rate any color screen of this size as outstanding in direct sun, at least not yet, but this one is much better than average.
Fish displayed as well-defined, clean, sharp arches with color shading. A Colorline adjustment lets you custom tune the way the unit shows levels of echo strength with different colors to better show fish in weeds or holding tight on the bottom. Auto mode runs the unit well and allows manual tweaking of the sensitivity adjustment. Manual mode allows access to more settings than you'll probably ever want to touch.
