* Memo to: WFB From: Linda Bridges Re: Firing Line
Here is the information you need, pursuant to several inquiries from readers who wish access to Firing Line.
The Hoover Institution in California, which owns and houses the tapes, has been working prodigiously to make the material accessible. This is a huge undertaking. For one thing, many of the early tapes were in different formats from the current standard. Copying them has to be done carefully to keep them from deteriorating.
But the archivist, Dr. Elena S. Danielson, reports that, thanks to a grant from the National Television and Video Preservation Foundation, plus "funds donated by a Firing Line admirer" who wants anonymity, the work is going forward at a good pace.
As of today, purchasers can get copies of any of the 400 programs "that have received preservation treatment" (there are 1,504 Firing Lines in all). More are being added to the list of available shows as time and money permit. The entire descriptive catalogue we produced after the program ended in 1999 can be accessed at http://hoohila.stanford.edu/firingline.
Visitors to the website can request transcripts of any of the programs. An index to the catalogue indicates which of the programs are currently available on VHS.
* Dear Mr. Buckley: Since you have indicated in a past issue that it is "more permissible, by idiomatic usage," to say "that's him," rather than the grammatically correct "that's he," perhaps I should infer the answer to my question, which is similar. If you will indulge me, however, I will ask it anyway.
