Inmates in Bible study.(Letter to the Editor)
As someone who has spent 30 years visiting over 600 prisons, I can readily affirm many of the observations of Eli Lehrer in his article "Justice Behind Bars" (June 14).
I was surprised, however, by his statement that "explicitly religious programs" (like Prison Fellowship Ministries' Innerchange Freedom Initiative) produced "mixed results and have high dropout rates." The University of Pennsylvania released a report last summer of a four-year study that found, among other things, that recidivism fell 65 percent among our program graduates against a control group of similar prisoners. The number of graduates reincarcerated during a two-year period was 8 percent (the national figure is 67 percent).
