Many of the people involved in the campaign--parents of children with juvenile diabetes, for example, and Nancy Reagan--deserve our sympathy. But the campaign too often traffics in falsehoods. The more-funding lobby often claims that Bush promised funding for 78 embryonic stem-cell lines but has made only 19 available to researchers.
