* Scientists in South Korea announced that they had cloned a human embryo. Supporters of "research cloning"--that is, the creation of human embryos for the purpose of research in which they are destroyed--said that the announcement showed the folly of trying to enact a U.S. ban on cloning. Such a ban would only cause the research to move out of the country. "It is no accident that this week's breakthrough took place in South Korea, where government funding is available for this kind of research, rather than in the United States, where it is not," editorialized the Washington Post. It advises Congress to ban cloning only when it would be used to produce babies, and to make sure that the research proceeds in an ethical manner.
