After his tools were stolen a half dozen times in the midst of major renovations on his house, homeowner Greg Collins of Modesto, California, lay in wait for the burglars to strike a seventh time.
To stop the theft of materials from his garage where they were stored, Collins decided to sleep in his garage with two loaded shotguns beside him. At 5:26 a.m. on the morning of Wednesday, January 26, Collins, awakened by a crash caused by a box that he had leaned against the garage door, saw an intruder walking toward where he had stored his tools.
Collins told the intruder to "freeze," but the intruder lunged toward him, according to statements that Collins made to the Modesto Bee. He told the Bee: "I was very scared and I was panicky. He took about one step. I aimed low and shot him." The intruder, later identified as Michael Sanchez, was hit in the elbow and hip with the light load of birdshot that Collins had in his gun.
